Cytomegalovirus Antibody in Normal Persons and Patients with Chronic Renal Failure

Abstract
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection adversely affect the clinical outcome after renal . transplantation. Seronegative transplants recipients receiving a kidney from a seropositive donor are at geatest risk of experiencing serious infection. For this reason it is rquired to screen for CMV antibody in donors and recipients before renal transplan-tation.
By the use of ELISA method, normal blood donors and the patients with chronic renal failure were tested for the presence of IgG and IgM antibody. 39 of 40 blood donors and ¢¥all of 54 patients on heniodialysis were positive for IgG antibody.
None of 100 blood donors, 4 of 81(5%) patients on hemodialysis and 2 of 23 (8%) renal transplants were positive for IgM antibody. This means that almost all adult Korean experience CMV infection before adulthood. It is concluded that screening for IgG antibody in blood or organ donors is meaningless in Korea.
